Furfural, also known as furan-2-carbaldehyde, is an organic compound derived from various agricultural byproducts.

Appearance: A colorless liquid.

Uses:

• Solvent: A selective solvent used in the refining process to remove impurities and improve the quality of lubricating oils.

• Fuel Additives furfural might be used as an additive to improve the cetane number (combustion quality) of diesel fuel.

• Rosin Extraction: It is used as a solvent to extract rosin (resinous material) from pine wood for use in varnishes, adhesives, and other applications.

Industry and Common Applications:

• Flavors and Fragrances: It is used as a flavoring agent and fragrance ingredient in certain fragrance manufacturing processes.

• Electrochemical Applications: Furfural can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of carbon materials and electrode materials.

• Agrochemicals: It is used as a raw material for the synthesis of agricultural chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, and plant growth regulators.
