Calcium Nitrate is a chemical compound composed of calcium and nitrate ions. It is commonly encountered as a hydrated form with varying degrees of hydration and is widely used in agriculture, horticulture, and industry.

Chemical Formula: Ca(NO₃)₂

Appearance: A white to whitish-grey granular solid.

Uses:

  • Chemical Industry: Utilized in chemical synthesis processes, including the production of other calcium compounds, nitric acid, and specialty chemicals. It serves as a source of calcium and nitrogen in organic and inorganic reactions.

  • Laboratory Reagent: Used as a laboratory reagent in analytical chemistry experiments and research. It can be utilized in titrations, precipitation reactions, and synthesis of other compounds.

  • Additional Applications: Calcium nitrate is sometimes used as an additive in concrete production to accelerate the setting and hardening process.  In wastewater treatment, it is one of the common sources in the denitrification process to remove excess nitrate from wastewater as the microorganisms convert nitrate into nitrogen gas, which is released harmlessly into the atmosphere.
