5-Sulfosalicylic acid also known as sulfosalicylic dihydrate is an organic acid containing a sulfonic acid group (SO₃H) and a carboxylic acid group (COOH) bonded to a benzene ring.
**Chemical Formula:** C7H6O6S
**Appearance**: White crystalline solid.
**Uses:**
**Pharmaceuticals:** Used as a disintegrating agent or a pH modifier to enhance the dissolution and bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in solid dosage forms.
**Chelating Agent:** It can act as a chelating agent, binding to metal ions and facilitating their removal or separation.
**Analytical Chemistry:** Used in analytical chemistry as a reagent for the determination of metal ions, particularly heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury.
**Mordent:** Utilized in the textile industry as a mordant in dyeing processes.
**Antifreeze and Deicing Fluids:** Its low freezing point allows it to be a component in antifreeze and deicing fluids.
