Sodium Borate refers to a family of salts containing sodium cations and borate anions. The most common form is sodium tetraborate decahydrate, also known as borax.
Chemical Formula: Na₂[B₄O₅(OH)₄]·8H₂O
Appearance: White to yellowish crystalline solid.
Uses:
Glass and Ceramic Industry: Borax is also used as a component in borosilicate glass, which has high thermal resistance and chemical durability.
Analytical Chemistry: It serves as a reference material for calibration, quality control, and validation procedures in qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses.
Water treatment: Acts as a corrosion inhibitor in water treatment processes to protect metal pipes and equipment.
Fertilizer: It is applied as a micronutrient fertilizer in agriculture to correct boron deficiencies in soil and promote healthy plant growth.
Additional Applications: It is used as a flux in soldering and welding processes to facilitate the flow of molten metals and prevent oxidation. Also added to textiles, wood products, and plastics as a flame retardant to reduce the risk of fire and slow down flame spread.
